I Think I Can, I Think I Can…

In an effort to market my book, I’ve discovered that many bookstores are willing to accept books on consignment. At no cost, they will stock a few copies of a particular author’s book. If they sell, the store gets a cut, as does the author. If the books don’t sell, the books are returned to the author. Thus far, I’ve been able to place two books at the Country Store at Historic Spring Villiage in Cape May, NJ. Now, I hope to get a copy or two on the shelves of the gift shop at the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pa. If you have any leads, let me know.

  2. I’m just wondering: is there some central civil war historical organization that could connect you with the gift shops of all the major battlefield sites? I know for years, since my dad and I both have an avid interest in that period of history, we traveled to so many battlefields and bought loads of books and souvenirs. And what about the Chambers of Commerce in the cities that are forever connect with the war and its battles? Some of those people might be able to direct you to other sites likely to sell your work.

Also, have you considered offering to do a short program and book signing at local libraries? If you could cover several counties — or even better — several states — doing that, you would be sure to get audiences that are genuinely interested and probably very willing to buy. Sometimes libraries draw small audiences, but at least those who came would be predisposed to want what you have, and then tell others about it — and word of mouth is the best advertisement in the long run.

Then there are the places like local inns and bed-and-breakfast inns that are close to historic sites. I know for me, that idea helped. I have a series of novels called “The Smoky Mountain Series,” and there is a family-run inn that rests on one of the mountains in the Smokies. I asked them to carry my books in their gift shop. I placed them there — and actually in every store where they are — on a consignment basis. There must surely be several places like that close to historic battlefields as well.

You may have already looked into these possibilities, but hopefully, if not, they will be of help.

    God bless your efforts.

    • Thanks, Sandra. Yes, I am exploring each if your ideas. I have been able to schedule several readings/book presentations. I have just started to reach out to bed and breakfast establishments. Thanks again.

      All the best.
